Pinterest for Your Small Business Marketing

FB, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, Instagram, Bebo, FourSquare, Google+, and the list goes on...

With all the social media networks out there, it's hard to know which networks are right for your small business. You can flood all them with mediocre content and hope that someone sees something they like... OR, you can pick a couple of the social media networks, and focus on developing better content and stronger relationships. But which to choose? Have you considered Pinterest?

Pinterest is a relatively new social network that is quickly headed to outperform Facebook in several key e-commerce metrics. The pinboard-style, "pin"-sharing website hit 139 million visits in September, not exactly FB traffic, but some data suggests that people stay on the site longer and tend to buy more than on Facebook.

"In Q2 2011 Pinterest.com represented 1.2% of social media revenue for e-commerce sites. It now represents 17.4% and is quickly gaining on FB. (That shift from 1.2% to 17.4% is based on measurements we made across 40 of our client sites - most of which are top 500 internet retailers.) We project Pinterest will be responsible for 40% of social media e-commerce transactions by end of Q2 2012, reducing Facebook's share to slightly under 60% from 86% a year ago."

The demographics are also unique. Pinterest's user base is predominantly female, commonly estimated at 80% of active users. Almost 30% of it's users are between the ages of 25 and 34 years old, and the majority have kids.

The Pinterest Basics

REMEMBER: Pinterest is a way to organize and share your bookmarks in a visual way.

When you sign up, they give you some default boards, but you can delete them, rename them, and create new boards. One of the biggest mistakes I see on Pinterest is using just a single board named something like "Things I Love" to pin everything. It does not categorize stuff you find, therefore doesn't help others find it either!

You can pin 4 types of material:

Picture - Upload a file to pin or pin directly from a URL

Video - YouTube works great with Pinterest

Slideshows - This can be done through SlideShare

Audio - NEW, done with SoundCloud

Once someone pins something, you can then like it, repin it to one of your boards,

and comment on it.

Some tips on how to use Pinterest.com for your small business.

• Make sure your content is visual. This could mean working on your product photography or graphics, but make sure what you share is visually appealing.

• Make sure you add a short and informative or funny description to your pins, but remember to be smart about the keywords you're using. "This is toooooo cute... " doesn't tell the viewer anything.

• Add appropriate hashtags to the description of your pin to help people find it.

• Size does matter... The images featured are 600px wide and infinity pixels long. Pinterest dynamically sizes pinboards to the user's screen, so use images at least 300×300 for decent quality.

• To add a price to a pin, type the $ or £ symbol followed by the number amount in the description. When you are finished, click Pin It.

... And don't forget to add a Pinterest button to your website. Allow your viewers to share for you! Get your Pinterest button here http://pinterest.com/about/goodies/
